Single base pair mutations were predicted from the published nuclear mutation rates for both species. The height of the column represents the average prediction. The black line represents the range of predictions over the range of split times (i.e., 4.5 to 7 million years). In short, if the human and chimpanzee lineages diverged 4.5 million years ago, then only around 8.4 million DNA differences would separate them today. Instead, if the human and chimpanzee lineages diverged 7 million years ago, then only around 13.1 million DNA differences would separate them. Today, over 26 million single base pair differences separate the human and chimpanzee nuclear DNA sequences.
