School finally started. I arrive at the college an hour before my first class, eager to meet my boss, Dr. Xocotzin. Although she interviewed me on Skype, I haven’t had the chance to meet her in person yet, since she was away doing research in South America during the summer.

I’ve seen Dr. Xocotzin’s photo on the department website, but it doesn’t do her justice at all. She’s a big, strong woman in her mid-fifties. Her bright hazel eyes, wavy black hair, and glowing, tanned face all exude charisma and sexuality. She represents a regal presence, and should wear a crown and sit on a throne, not behind a rusty desk in a dingy department office.

She stands up as soon as she sees me and holds out her hand. “Hi, you must be Linda, I’m Valarie Xocotzin. Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you!” I shake hands with her. She has a firm grasp, another characteristic of a leader.

I know quite a lot about Dr. Xocotzin from our online conversation and my secret research on her. She has a background in biology. She told me openly that she was skeptical about evolutionary theories, although she wasn’t a creationist either. She’s more of a pagan in terms of religion, and yet she’s a biologist in training. She thinks human nature is mainly shaped by social structure and culture. I can’t say I agree with her, but I’ve learned to tolerate other schools of thoughts. Besides, I’m only grateful that she hired me despite our different beliefs and values.

“Have you read the article on cougar relationship in the current issue of Discover?”

“No,” I don’t read Discover or any other non-academic magazines. “What’s about?”

“It’s about how well the relationship works.”

“Oh? What’s the success rate?” I ask without thinking.

She frowns slightly. “How do you define a success relationship? How long it lasts? How many children? How sexually fulfilling?”

Damn. She got me there. I chuckle. “I guess there’s more than one way to measure it.”

“Anyway. Read it. I’ll bring you the magazine once I’m done.”

“Sure, thanks,” I say unwillingly.
