INFLECTION POINT?

Vehicle prices vary by country, and no two car models are identical, but several recent studies suggest that a rapidly approaching price parity with similar classes of gasoline-powered vehicles will soon lead to an inflection point in the sale of electric vehicles. The Swiss bank UBS forecasts electric vehicle prices to be comparable with those of internal combustion engines as early as 2018 in Europe, by 2023 in China, and by 2025 in the United States.31 Analysts at Bloomberg and at the investment bank Morgan Stanley forecast price parity in the United States and Europe by 2025.32 Most analysts expect price parity between electric vehicles and gasoline-powered automobiles between 2020 and 2025, and there is near universal agreement that when this occurs it will create dramatically greater demand for EVs. UBS illustrates the importance of price parity to the growth in EV sales in figure 9.3, forecasting compound annual growth rates of 46 percent from 2020 onward.
