Chapter 31

My forearm was spurting blood from a gaping wound. I didn’t feel it until we were sitting inside the limo.

“How’d that happen?” Millie said.

“I guess I sliced it open when he knocked me down.” I grimaced at the blood rolling down my arm.

“You must have landed on something, like broken glass.” Millie shimmied out of a nylon slip and wrapped it around the cut. “Put pressure on it,” she said.

The limo driver’s voice came through the intercom. “Where are we headed?”

“Go to 101 West Eighty-First Street, off Columbus Avenue.”

Confused, I whispered, “What for?” Neither Millie nor I lived on the Upper West Side. The address she gave was a high-rent district.

“It’s Whitney’s place. She lives alone, so we’ll have privacy. Steven can patch you up there.” Her voice rang out as she shouted at the driver again. “Faster!”

She grabbed her phone from her bag and started texting. Her face was intent on the screen as she sent the messages. When she looked up, I was adjusting the slip on my arm. The blood had soaked through the layers of the fabric.

“Does it hurt too bad?”

It was pretty bad, but I didn’t want to sound like the weak sister. “Yeah, kind of. Funny thing. I didn’t feel it when it happened.”

“You’ll be okay. This stuff happens sometimes. Steven will fix you up. He’s really good.”

Her phone pinged. As she checked it, she said, “They’ll be waiting for us.”

I was relieved to hear Steven would check me out. In addition to the gaping wound, my wrist was swelling, and my ribs ached. But I was also worried about the fallout for my fellow team member. I said, “What about Rod? Shouldn’t someone see what’s happening with him?”

“I let them know Rod’s in custody. Steven will make sure he gets bailed out. He knows who to call. Money’s not a problem, Gatsby covers that. They’ll take care of him. I’ll see Rod tomorrow morning, I’m sure of that.”

I had misgivings and wanted to ask how she could be so confident that it would be handled successfully. And that name again. Who was Gatsby? I was still being kept in the dark.

“Are you sure Rod will be all right?”

Millie tried to sound upbeat. “Absolutely. This went off just as planned. No major problems, nothing that can’t be fixed. Everything’s cool.”

Millie didn’t fool me. One look revealed the crack in her brave facade. Tears welled up in her eyes, smearing her eyeliner. She wiped it with the back of her hand, but rubbing made it worse. “Shit,” she whispered.

I wanted to offer comfort, but she turned her back and looked out the window. After a moment, she spoke in a wavering voice. “Rod’s tough.”

I was quick to agree. “God, yes. Rod can handle himself.”

When she didn’t respond, I nudged her with my elbow because both hands were bloody. “Is there anything I can do? Wish I could make you feel better.”

She shook her head. We sat in silence until we pulled up to an apartment building on Eighty-First.
