Yuki got home in time for a late dinner. His mom teased him about having his head in the clouds the whole time, but Yuki felt impervious to it. Back in his room, he collapsed on his bed. After a few minutes of lying back and staring at the ceiling, he couldn’t contain himself any longer and picked up his phone to text Phoebe.

“You won’t believe what we did today.”

Ed was still basking in the afterglow the next morning. He rushed to get ready for school, unable to wait longer than absolutely necessary before he could see Yuki again, and maybe hold him in his arms. Ed stuffed his things into his backpack and almost ran out of his room, slowing down only for the stairs.

Just after he turned towards the front door, he heard a voice behind him.

“Edan.”

It was Vic, who seemed to coalesce out of nowhere just to unnerve him.

“Yeah?” Ed replied, half turning around. “I’m gonna be late for school.”

Vic rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry, I won’t take up much of your precious time,” he said flatly.

“Fine,” Ed said, impatient to go. Impatient to see Yuki again.

“I’m going travelling on business for two weeks or so, to deal with Lewson,” Vic said. Ed couldn’t have received happier news. “When I return, there will be a lot to discuss.”

“Sure.”

Vic crossed his arms. “I mean it, Edan. You still need to show some responsibility, college or no. I won’t tolerate more avoidance.”

By the sounds of it, Ed had two whole weeks of blissful avoidance. “Yeah, I said sure, okay? I gotta go.”

With that, Ed hurried out the door and into the waiting car.

“Floor it,” he said to Moe.
