Sonya sat next to me at the café breakfast bar near Montrose Beach on a lightly busy day with foot traffic. I peered around the room, a habit of mine to watch who comes and goes, while I sat at the end of the bar with my back to the wall. I’d taken the day off from work, and she’d called Vincenzo to take the rest of the day off for herself as well. Our night together played over in my mind all morning, and I woke up early to spend quality time together. RJ sat next to us cloaked in his blanket away from prying eyes. Photographers would still follow us, even though I never went out of my way to be a public figure, but somehow they found us no matter where we went.

The waitress placed our breakfast down on the counter. I watched as Sonya played with RJ, and I couldn’t believe he was growing so fast.

“Tell me about your plans for school.”

Sonya lifted her orange juice, taking a gulp.

She planned on getting back to in-person classes, so I told her as long as things weren’t disturbed at our home, I would be fine. Our son’s birthday was the top priority for me, and I wanted to go all out to show him that he was the most important person to me.

“I spoke with a counselor at Chicago University. My studies will be art history.”

“You end up with a bachelor’s degree?”

Her head shook as she picked up her knife and cut into her pancakes. I rubbed the knuckles of her free hand.

“RJ is my concern, though.”

She lifted her gaze to me.

“He can go to daycare.”

The thought of RJ in someone’s care beyond my parents or brothers gave me great anxiety.

“RJ will never be in daycare.”

“But he needs to be around other kids.”

“He has a cousin.”

Her eyes lingered on me.

“You can bat your eyes, but my mind is made up.”

“What are we doing for his birthday?”

“A party just for the family.”

“I’m fine with that, something simple, with cake and ice cream.” She cooed and pecked RJ on the nose.

I had a sudden impulse to take her to the bathroom and bend her over to take my girth in her mouth.

“You’re not hungry?” Sonya glanced at my plate of omelet and sausage.

“Not for this.” I pushed the plate away from me.

“Da da.” Both our eyes spiked high in shock.

“Did he…?” I pivoted off the chair to pick up RJ.

“That’s the first time he’s really said anything remotely like that.”

I grinned, shifting him in my arms.

“Little man, you say it again.”

Some of the customers peered in our direction.

His eyes scanned my face, and he smiled.

“Da da.” He drooled.

“Say Momma,” Sonya coerced.

“Are you jealous?”

“Yep. I’m the one that carried him for so long. I was around before you, and he says da da first.” She pouted.

“Come on, let’s take a walk.”

“Where?”

“Along the beach.”

Sonya finished off her drink; I’d already paid for our meal. RJ angled to his mom, and I let her take him.
