Sonya sat next to me at the café breakfast bar near Montrose Beach on a lightly busy day with foot traffic. I peered around the room, a habit of mine to watch who comes and goes, while I sat at the end of the bar with my back to the wall. Iâd taken the day off from work, and sheâd called Vincenzo to take the rest of the day off for herself as well. Our night together played over in my mind all morning, and I woke up early to spend quality time together. RJ sat next to us cloaked in his blanket away from prying eyes. Photographers would still follow us, even though I never went out of my way to be a public figure, but somehow they found us no matter where we went.
The waitress placed our breakfast down on the counter. I watched as Sonya played with RJ, and I couldnât believe he was growing so fast.
âTell me about your plans for school.â
Sonya lifted her orange juice, taking a gulp.
She planned on getting back to in-person classes, so I told her as long as things werenât disturbed at our home, I would be fine. Our sonâs birthday was the top priority for me, and I wanted to go all out to show him that he was the most important person to me.
âI spoke with a counselor at Chicago University. My studies will be art history.â
âYou end up with a bachelorâs degree?â
Her head shook as she picked up her knife and cut into her pancakes. I rubbed the knuckles of her free hand.
âRJ is my concern, though.â
She lifted her gaze to me.
âHe can go to daycare.â
The thought of RJ in someoneâs care beyond my parents or brothers gave me great anxiety.
âRJ will never be in daycare.â
âBut he needs to be around other kids.â
âHe has a cousin.â
Her eyes lingered on me.
âYou can bat your eyes, but my mind is made up.â
âWhat are we doing for his birthday?â
âA party just for the family.â
âIâm fine with that, something simple, with cake and ice cream.â She cooed and pecked RJ on the nose.
I had a sudden impulse to take her to the bathroom and bend her over to take my girth in her mouth.
âYouâre not hungry?â Sonya glanced at my plate of omelet and sausage.
âNot for this.â I pushed the plate away from me.
âDa da.â Both our eyes spiked high in shock.
âDid heâ¦?â I pivoted off the chair to pick up RJ.
âThatâs the first time heâs really said anything remotely like that.â
I grinned, shifting him in my arms.
âLittle man, you say it again.â
Some of the customers peered in our direction.
His eyes scanned my face, and he smiled.
âDa da.â He drooled.
âSay Momma,â Sonya coerced.
âAre you jealous?â
âYep. Iâm the one that carried him for so long. I was around before you, and he says da da first.â She pouted.
âCome on, letâs take a walk.â
âWhere?â
âAlong the beach.â
Sonya finished off her drink; Iâd already paid for our meal. RJ angled to his mom, and I let her take him.
