This objective is achieved by a careful evaluation of a patient’s study casts. The instrument used to aid the examination of the study cast is called a “surveyor” and the procedure is known as “surveying”.

Surveying

The surveyor essentially comprises a vertical rod that is held perpendicular to a horizontal platform (Fig 6-1). The rod may be moved horizontally and up and down. Attached to the horizontal platform is the cast table to which the study cast is fastened. This may be positioned in various planes. The vertical rod represents the path along which the denture is inserted and removed – the path of insertion – and this can be altered by changing the tilt of the cast on the cast table. By positioning this vertical rod against the teeth and soft tissue areas of the cast, their morphology can be examined in relation to various paths of insertion. The various surveyor tools are illustrated in Fig 6-2.
