Herpes zoster (Shingles)

This condition, which is the reactivation of a dormant chickenpox (Varicella zoster) virus, may affect one side of the face, and is generally amenable to homoeopathic treatment. The key remedy is Rhus toxicodendron 12–30 three times daily, which will often shorten the duration of the disorder. Ophthalmic herpes zoster, however, is usually better treated with Prunus spinosa 12–30 three to four times daily. Varicella nosode 30 may also be given concurrently, once daily. A Rhus toxicodendron cream (Rhus toxicodendron Ø 20 drops in 50g of aqueous cream) may be applied to the skin (neither near the eye nor in the mouth), 3–6 times daily. Intramuscular or deep subcutaneous injections of vitamin B12 500mcg daily appear to produce pain relief and rapid healing. Intravenous vitamin C is also believed to be helpful.

Kali phosphoricum is of great service in preventing and treating post-herpetic neuralgia. Treatment may be complemented with Vitamin E 600IU daily by mouth and vitamin B12 by injection, 1000mcg daily for 6 days, followed by the same dose once weekly for 6 weeks.
