Chapter 13

Jillian

Our freefall from high among the trees is lightning fast, but it feels like an eternity, and I scream the entire way down.

After Remmel cut the vine, he dropped his knife and wrapped his body around me like a protective cocoon. He thuds to the ground, flat on his back, with me on top of him.

The wind gets knocked out of me, and it’s hard to catch my breath. When I finally do, I panic because Remmel isn’t moving beneath me. If the damn barbarian died saving my life, I’ll be super pissed.

When I roll off of him, he groans, and a hysterical laugh bubbles up from my throat. He’s not dead. Remmel’s alive!

How in the hell did he survive a fall like that? I cup his face with my hands. “Remmel, look at me.”

His eyelids flutter open, and his face contorts into a pain-filled grimace. “Jill-ee-un safe?”

That’s what he’s worried about? Whether I’m safe?

“Yeah, I’m fine. I little bruised and winded, but mostly fine.” I pat him lightly on the chest, but I think it’s more for my comfort than his. “How about you? How bad are you hurt?”

He shrugs his answer and then moves his arms and legs, testing to see if they work. Thank God they do.

I’m worried that his back is injured. If there were paramedics on the way, I wouldn’t move him. But since there’s no 9-1-1 service on UD237, I need to know if he’s mobile. “Can you sit up?”

He nods and I help him up to a sitting position. He got clocked pretty hard and still looks a little dazed from the fall.

I’m no medical expert, but I run my hands down his arms and legs, across his back, and along his ribs looking for serious injuries. If Rakuis bruise, his scales will be black and blue by morning, but nothing seems broken. He could have internal bleeding, though.

When I’m done checking him out, he’s sporting a raging hard-on that juts out from his leather kilt. At least we know that part of his anatomy still works.

“Remmel safe,” he answers, as if to tell me that I’m worried over nothing. I wish he could share more information with me, but details are limited when communicating like Tarzan and Jane.

“Wait right here,” I say. “I’m going to get you some water.” I hurry back to our camp area and grab my backpack, which holds my canteen. When I return, Remmel is standing up and stretching. Stubborn ass. “What in the hell are you doing? I told you to wait. Sit your ass back down and drink some water.”

Surprisingly, he lowers himself to the ground and takes the canteen from my shaking hands. Now that the immediate danger has passed, I’m trembling from head to toe from the adrenaline rush.

Fuck. I was almost eaten alive by a creepy carnivorous tree with tentacle-like vines and an alien Venus fly trap mouth, and Remmel almost died while saving me.

“Jill-ee-un sit.”

My rubbery legs collapse, and I plop down beside him.
