Who are you? I wanted to ask.

“Who...?”

It was a tremendous effort that brought tears of frustration to my eyes.

“Who? Carla, I don’t know what you mean.”

The lady seemed to be getting even more upset than I was. Her eyes were large and had a frantic look about them that was scaring the living daylights out of me. I thought that she was about to start shouting at me.

“Who...you...?” I swallowed painfully.

“Where...me...? Don’t...remember...anything at all.”

Tears were pooling in the corner of my eyes and I knew that if I blinked it would send them cascading over my cheeks which would cause a tickle that I would not be able to scratch. I did blink but I felt nothing; the tears trickled down my face and I felt nothing.
