Chapter Twelve

He wanted her. Plain and simple. Nothing else attached. This woman was so different from any he’d ever known. Maybe it was that she knew his father so well. That she knew Weston, was privy to his stories before he even told them.

Maybe she was just so good at what she did for a living that she could draw a story out of anyone.

He had a lot of maybes, no answers and one very definite, unrelated conclusion.

He absolutely could not, ever, act upon his desire. You couldn’t always help what you felt, but you could damn sure help what you did with it. Or about it.

Sitting there, holding her gaze, he didn’t want to look away. Didn’t want her to, either. And knew he had to do something to break the contact before it was too late.

“Dogs,” he said. Shook his head. And started again. “I wanted to talk to you about another financial expenditure.”

She turned back to her books. “Sure, what’s up?”

The preplanned conversational starter had served its purpose. Now he had to actually have the conversation.

“I’d like to build a second kennel, like you mentioned the other day.”

“I didn’t mention it. You did. You wanted me to build one on another property.”

“And you said we could do it here and I think you’re right.”

“You’re taking my words out of context. I was only responding to what you’d said.”

Was she being purposely difficult? Could he blame her if she was?

“Are you opposed to it? We could take in double the rescues while still maintaining a sense of home for them.”

“With the same pen? Or different ones? It might be a lot of dogs in one space.”

“That’s what I was thinking. But there’s that little morning space off the piano room on the other side of the living area. We could build over there. And take turns with feedings and things. I’d do one kennel in the morning and the other at night and you could do the same. That way the dogs would still get both of us every day.”

“And we could both do both sometimes, so they get used to having more than one person around at a time.”

His idea had involved not seeing her every day, but she made a good point. Some days they could both do both.

“The main thing is that we could take in more dogs.”

“Agreed. But...what about when I go? That’ll be an awful lot for you to deal with.”

He put a couple of books in his keep pile, currently sitting on the edge of the shelf below the one where he was working. “I’m a single guy living alone. I can handle two kennels on my own. And I work from home some days, too, and the dogs can take turns coming to work with me. I can also hire someone at that point to come in during the day.”

He wanted the second kennel. Would have it even if he had to wait the year. The project...one of his father’s ideas that worked, actually, appealed to him in ways he hadn’t imagined.
