Possible Side Effects
Acetaminophen alone rarely causes side effects when it is taken as directed. This drug is not for long-term use, however, as prolonged use can cause liver damage, itching, fever, rash, yellowing of the eyes, and low blood sugar. When combined with caffeine and aspirin or caffeine and butalbital, it can cause rebound headache if taken more than two or three days a week. The opioid combination forms may cause drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and urinary retention (inability to urinate).
How to Use Acetaminophen
Even though acetaminophen is available over the counter, please consult your pediatrician before giving this medication to your child. Too often people believe that because a drug is available over the counter it does not pose any danger. Acetaminophen can cause serious side effects if it is taken for a long time or in large doses, and what constitutes a safe dose for an older child or adult is likely a dangerous dose for a young child. In general, no child should ever take more than 75 mg of acetaminophen per kilogram of body weight per day, or about 35 mg of acetaminophen per pound of body weight per day. For example, of your child weighs 50 pounds, his maximum daily dose of acetaminophen should be no more than 1,750 mg per day. It is very important to read the label on the bottle of acetaminophen and do the arithmetic to be sure your child does not exceed his or her daily maximum amount, or severe liver damage could occur.
