TWENTY-THREE

Jason and Charlotte fell silent after she finished off the journal entry, both captivated by Kidd’s daring tale and the description of a secret cave’s location.

Finally, Charlotte spoke. “I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and say this island Kidd is referring to is the same island where you were investigating the blast incidents.”

Jason smiled. “Anegada. The description certainly matches up. A low-lying island surrounded by reefs.” He paused a moment, taking in the story, then wrapped an arm around Charlotte. “I think Captain Kidd just told us from the grave where he hid his famous treasure. After three hundred and fifty years, it’s time for his little trail to be followed. It’s time we find this cave.”

Slipping out his phone, Jason took pictures of the text, paying special attention to the lines describing the opening into the cave. The description wasn’t complicated, and Jason was confident he could find the place without the pictures, but he snapped them just to be sure.

Once finished, he dropped the phone back into his pocket, and Charlotte shut the journal and clicked off the lamp. As they moved back to the bookshelf, they heard voices echoing from down the passageway. With Charlotte still clutching the journal, they gravitated toward the entryway and listened as the voices grew louder.

“I don’t have time for games, old man,” a harsh voice snarled.

Jason recognized it instantly. He could still see the wretch’s face—still feel his breath when he told him back in Venice that it was over.

“Where are they?” Boris grunted. “And where’s Kidd’s journal?”

“They’re not here,” Avery replied. “I don’t know who—”

“You’re a terrible liar.” Boris coughed, and the sounds of heavy footsteps reverberated down into the catacombs. “Wake! I know you’re down there! Get out here now with Kidd’s journal, or I’ll blow this man’s brains out.”

Jason’s eyes sprang wide, then he focused on Charlotte. When she strode toward the doorway, resolved to save her friend from the grips of the deadly Russian criminal, Jason stopped her.

“No,” he whispered, “I’ll handle this. You hide.”

When she was about to protest, Jason snatched the journal from her hands. Instead of taking it to the Russian, he unzipped her backpack and secured the old book inside it. Grabbing a different old leather-bound book from the shelf, he pointed toward the back of the room. “Stay here and keep hidden. I’ll handle this.”

“By yourself? There’s—”

“The important thing is protecting you and Avery and making sure Reznikov doesn’t get his hands on the treasure.”

“You’re forcing my hand, Wake!” Boris shouted.

Jason spun on his heels with the book in his grip and dashed for the corridor. “Wait!” he shouted back. He exited the library and peeked down the walkway just as a gunshot shook the air, echoing down into the tunnels. Jason’s mouth dropped open, and his eyes froze in anger and terror as Avery’s body collapsed into view, tumbling down the stairs and coming to rest against the stone floor. Jason gasped as blood pooled out from a bullet wound to the museum curator’s forehead.
