Chapter Ten

Kiya instantly woke as her mobile went off with its special ring. She would have to leg it to the hospital, as that ring meant one of her patients had gone into labor. She reached across to the dresser and looked at the text that advised which patient the emergency call was for. With a few succinct words, she confirmed her arrival time at the hospital.

On autopilot, she dressed in comfortable slacks and a silk blouse. Still barely awake at four a.m., she walked into the children’s room to check on them. A scream welled up in her throat on the sight of a dark shadowy figure sitting in a corner armchair; but she instantly covered her mouth with her hands to stifle the sound on realizing that it was Richard. Both children were still blissfully asleep.

Richard opened his eyes, stood, and silently escorted her out of the room into the hallway.

“What are you doing in here?” she whispered fiercely.

“What are you doing up? And why are you dressed?” he asked, looking at her from head to toe.

She gritted her teeth in exasperation. “One of my patients just went into labor. I’m headed to the hospital. Laura is coming over shortly to look after the kids while I’m out.”

“Call her back. I will stay with them.”

“I’m not leaving you in my house! I thought you had left already.”

Richard sighed. “I can’t control your thoughts. But I’m not going to waste my breath repeating myself.” He pulled his phone from his pocket and sent a quick message. It was immediately answered. “Ivan will drive you to the hospital,” he told her after reading the text.

“I don’t need anyone to drive me. I have a perfectly operational vehicle, and I’ve been driving since I was seventeen years old.” Kiya gasped as a thought just came to her. She balled her fist and punched him as hard as she could in the stomach, and then gasped again, but in pain. His stomach was rock hard. He hadn’t even flinched.

“Why did you do that?” He looked at her as if she had lost her mind.

“That was for you exposing me to the possibility of a pregnancy last night! And to a sexual disease!”

“First of all, I’m clean. I haven’t been with another woman in months. And I have never fucked without a condom with any other woman.”

“So why did you with me?”

“How many times do I have to tell you that you’re mine?”

“And what about pregnancy? Did you just assume that I was on something? Unlike you, I don’t sleep around.”

“Glad to hear it.”

“That’s it? Did you forget the condom?” Kiya demanded.

“I didn’t forget,” he said coolly.

“Urgh! I really hate you!” she hissed.

“Keep telling yourself that.” He moved closer to her and spoke directly in her ear. “Personally, if that’s the way you hate, I can’t wait to get some more of it.”

She pushed hard at his chest. “Argh!”

He didn’t budge.

Laura rushed into the house through the front door, looking like someone who had been scared witless.
