Chapter 5: Reiki for Individuals
The Reiki practitioner experiences the world in a new way. Slowly at first, she learns to call the universal life energy into her hands when she desires some good to occur. Whether it is sending this great love energy to another for healing and peace, or helping herself to relieve anxiety or a headache, the Reiki practitioner begins to see it as a tool to be used.
What happens next is that the Reiki turns the tables. Instead of using the Reiki, the Reiki begins to use her. One likely reason is that the body becomes a good conductor for the energy. She attracts it like a lightning rod, because she is the most likely path for it to discharge. If this sounds too much like spirit possession to you, it might help to reflect on the fact that no harm can come from being relaxed and awake to the movement of good energy. Only good can come from such an interaction.
At the final stage in her Reiki development, the Reiki energy is felt all the time. Her universal life force energy conducting role, what she evolved for, increases as she allows it to continue flowing though her, mentally matching the energetic practice of loving-kindness, to heal her interpersonal and natural worlds through energy and her behavior.
This state of grace is her destiny, but she can leave it behind her if she chooses. All she has to do is stop loving, stop giving, and stop appreciating good things she encounters. If her ability to receive goodness stops, so will channeling the living energy. To end becoming an unconscious conduit for all that is good energetically in the universe, she must succumb to fear, anger, and other minor forms of meanness that signal the person is out of touch with her spirituality. Life may give us reasons to do this at times, particularly when love or life itself is in some way threatened.
For every ending, a new beginning is required. If we remain closed to love, life and light forever, we simply leave this life. Our bodies create for us the conditions to allow our energy to return to a state of being together with everything else that exists, and the possibility of rest and re-creation.
This may seem redundant, but living is about being alive. If we wish to become alive on the inside — to experience loving, gratitude, and joy — then we wish for life. People who want to experience life wish to be alive on the inside, and that is why they seek others for help, including psychotherapists and others in the helping professions.
The psychological empowerment from hidden energy
People who present for psychotherapy, and need help, sometimes require instruction in appreciating that not everything is tangible. They see most of their interactions with this world as transactional. They have learned to appreciate only the physical things. As we have already reviewed, being too tied up in the this-or-that of physicality ignores truths that the sages have taught since we could record what they have been saying.
