CHAPTER SIX

Meyer hit his head on a pipe. He noticed that his forehead had a huge cut and that lots of blood was running down into his eyes. The lights blinked back to life and he battled with trying to adjust his vision to the brightness. Blood clogged his senses. Worried about Hitler’s welfare, he strained to find him.

Meyer saw Hitler standing in a dark corner of the bridge. He had his eyes closed as if praying.

“Fuhrer! Are you all right?”

Hitler opened his eyes and looked directly at the Captain. He gave Meyer a hungry look. The German Leader started to sniff the air violently, reacting to the blood on Meyer’s face. He could see that Hitler’s eyes were glowing. Demonic! Cat like!

“What the hell?” was all the Captain could say.

Meyer’s face filled with amazement. Before the Captain could react, the ship was rocked by another blast. The Allies required a high price for their blood. The explosion caused Meyer to lose his footing again. He hit another pipe, knocking him out. The First Officer and a crewman ran to Meyer’s aide. His world was reduced to a black coma.

“Stop all engines!” Starger yelled above the noise and panic. “Go to silent running.”

The First Officer was concerned for his commander’s welfare. He was equally surprised to see the German Leader doing his best to see that all the comfort that could be given to the unconscious captain was readily made available. The efforts did not pass Starger’s heart without a little pride. And why not? Hitler had once been a soldier. He nearly lost his vision when a mustard gas bomb exploded in the man’s face during the First World War. Hitler knew what it was like to protect the Fatherland.

“How is the Captain?” Hitler whispered. “Will he live?”

“He is bad, I think. We need to reach a base as soon as possible.”

Hitler nervously ruffled his fingers through his hair. Something was clearly bothering the man. Starger, however, was too busy noticing the crew’s fear of dying. It was now his duty to see that all on board the Nauecilus made it to Norway in one piece.

“With respect, sir,” Starger nervously suggested, “My duty is now to this vessel. Please, take the Captain below. Your presence on the bridge, right now, will keep the men from thinking clearly.”

Hitler glared at Starger. The First Officer could actually feel his heart rising in his throat.

“You are right, Number One,” Hitler said, “I am too ill. Weak.”

First Officer and “Supreme Warlord” nodded in silent respect.

Starger went into action.

“The moment the convoy passes over our heads, I want the helm to execute an emergency course parallel to that of the Allies’ largest ship. Shadowing that ship, plot the best course to Norway.”

“How will we escape the wrath of the Allies, sir?” the helmsman asked. His face dripping with sweat.

“That is for me to worry over!”

Hearing their First Officer yell at them, the crew went into action. Before long, the crew was directly under an American Liberty Ship, heading to England.
