Chapter 20

Tallbear, Hanley, and Irene Katz huddled in a group and whispered to get their stories straight. The other three passengers on the helicopter stared at their guns and cowered close behind the pilot’s seats. The three of them constructed what Tallbear hoped would act as a believable cover story to keep the trio out of jail.

Approaching their designated landing zone on the tarmac, Tallbear watched as a half-dozen squad cars and a SWAT truck pulled into position as the chopper’s wheels touched down.

He raised his hands facing the other passengers. “Everyone needs to stay calm. We are law officers in the performance of our duties.” Tallbear watched the group’s faces, seeing none believed him. “Okay, when we land, I want everyone to do as the police officers tell you. File out slowly, your hands raised in the air, and make no sudden moves.”

The police cars formed a barrier around the helicopter, officers lined up behind them, their weapons at the ready. Hanley opened the door.

A voice came over a bullhorn. “Everyone inside, step out with your hands raised and proceed to kneel down. Cup your hands behind your heads and don’t move.” Their actions were carried out with textbook precision. Once the group was down, the SWAT officers moved in, their weapons trained, watching for any suspicious moves.

Hanley reached slowly for his identification and several guns swung to lock their sights on him. “I’m Hanley, FBI, and this young lady is under my protection,” he said, indicating Katz. The three of them, mixed among the passengers and pilots, were sorted out, disarmed, and handcuffed.

The officers moved quickly and took the three of them into custody until their stories could be verified. They were put into separate squad cars to be taken to police headquarters.

Even after showing their credentials, a guard was assigned to watch over them in the interrogation room at the Hollywood Division Headquarters. Tallbear looked across the table of the interrogation room and lifted his manacled hands addressing his two fellow suspects. “Just tell them the truth, and we’ll get this sorted out quickly.”

Minutes later, they were separated and taken into individual rooms for closer questioning. A portly detective by the name of Harper came in with his Asian partner, Detective Chang. Detective Harper circled the end of the table. “So, tell me again about this shootout at the Carlton.”

The officers spent the next hour going over Tallbear’s story, trying to break it down by tripping him up with repetition—standard procedure.

Tallbear leaned on the table. “I’ve told you all I know. After the threat to Miss Katz’s life, we exited our hotel room and came under attack by three men shooting at us. We returned fire, but I don’t think we hit anyone. When the service elevator opened, we took a chance and jumped into it, escaping to the roof. You know the rest.”

Harper shook his head, “And you have no idea who they were or why they attacked you?”

“No clue, detective.” Tallbear lied. It was only a partial lie since he failed to recognize the shotgun man or the other trench-coated one.
