Apoptosis is totally different from necrosis, another mode of cell death where the term “death” is more apt. Here, the process is unprogrammed, disorderly, and leaves behind remnants that produce an inflammatory response.33 Recent research has suggested that even necrosis is often not as chaotic as previously thought, and the researchers have argued that its distinction from apoptosis may not be clear cut in some cases.34 However, Dr Hume criticized that article, saying:

One key difference between apoptosis and necrosis is the failure in the latter case of a process that would normally permit the orderly removal of the corpses of the dead.35

Indeed, necrosis is often seen in cancerous tumors, basically because cells become starved of adequate blood supply. Conversely, failure of apoptosis is what causes many tumor cells in the first place; that is, cells that “hang around” beyond their use-by (“die-by”?!) date.36 There is every reason to believe that necrosis, at least the truly disorderly sort, occurred only after the Fall, while apoptosis was programmed to occur from creation.

Carnivory and Disease

The Bible doesn’t specifically explain how carnivory originated, but since creation was finished after day 6 (Gen. 2:1–3), there is no possibility that God later created new carnivorous animals. Instead, creationists have three explanations in general, although the specific explanation depends on the particular case.37
