LINDSAY

“Why are you here, Lindsay?” Reed asks as we continue down the trail. He promises we’re close, but with all the steep cliff faces surrounding us, it’s hard to tell.

“Can’t a girl visit Alaska on a whim?” I flash him a sweet smile, but it doesn’t do much to deter his curiosity. I should be able to fabricate a lie easily enough, but considering the man went down on me like there’s no tomorrow, I feel guilty making up a complete lie. “My brother. He’s why I came. He promised me there was nothing more breathtaking than seeing an Alaskan glacier in person.”

“Where’s your brother now.”

My chest constricts, the pain flooding my body like I lost him only yesterday. My body trembles, but I do my best to hold it together. Brandon wouldn’t want me crying on his behalf. Not here. Not now. “He was killed in action several months ago.”

Reed stops, gently taking my hand to still my feet. It’s the gentlest he’s been with me since I met him. “I’m so sorry, Lindsay.”

“I always hate when people say that,” I say with a weak laugh. “Not because it isn’t sincere or thoughtful. But because it forces me to say something back. And other than thanks what am I supposed to say? That it sucks he’s not here? That I still feel the loss just as deeply as I did the day we got the news? That I’ll never be the same.” I sniffle and wipe away a stray tear with the back of my hand. “I miss him, you know?”

“I can’t imagine losing any of my brothers.” Reed draws me into his embrace, his hands on my shoulders. His large frame swallows me up as if I’m a tiny little bird. I love how protected and safe I feel. Like a grizzly bear could charge down that trail and not have a chance to get anywhere near me.

I’ve never felt that way with anyone before.

The too serious thought causes me to shimmy out of his arms. “We better keep going. Weather and all that.” The sky is growing more overcast by the minute, but Reed doesn’t seem too concerned.

He places his hand on the small of my back and urges me forward.

“Too rough for me, huh?” I send my best flirtatious look over my shoulder, happy to be thinking about more fun things.

“Careful,” Reed warns. “We’re in the middle of nowhere. Don’t think I won’t have my way with you if you keep being a cock tease.”

I deliberately flash my eyes to his crotch. “Hey, I offered to give you a blowy.”

Reed’s expression is frozen, his lips parted and expression stunned. Several seconds elapse before he sputters a laugh. “A blowy? Is that what the kids are calling it these days?”

“I’m not a kid.” Maybe there’s some years between us. I’d guess eight or ten. But I’m certainly not too young for him.

He licks his lips, eyes heated. “I think we’ve already made that point.”

I’m tempted to stop right here in the middle of this trail and let him take me.
