Phoebe remembered meeting Lord Yarmouth at her brother and Persephone’s first and without a doubt disastrous ball. Phoebe’s first and last for a Season that ended as abruptly as their ball. He was tall, but not quite as thin as she remembered. Hadn’t she heard he’d been recently widowed? Mayhap his grief affected his appetite. An interesting topic of conversation, as the terror of that night had quite affected hers.

Lady Farnsworth beamed at the handsome lord bowing over her hand. Phoebe noted he held the lady’s hand far longer than was proper if the flush that added a glow to her chaperone’s face was any indication. As they were too busy gazing into one another’s eyes, Phoebe took the time to study the pair, wondering how old Persephone’s mother was. She was quite beautiful, petite with hair the color of meadow flower honey and the same warm brown eyes as her daughter. Risking another pointed glance at the lord, she noted he appeared older—mayhap only by a few years, but the two appeared to be closer in age than she’d previously assumed.

Tired of being ignored, she cleared her throat. Lady Farnsworth finally spoke. “How lovely to see you again, Lord Yarmouth.”

“I assure you the pleasure is all mine.” His gallant reply had the roses in Lady Farnsworth’s cheeks deepening much to his obvious delight.

“Lady Phoebe,” he bowed over her hand, but only for a brief moment.

“It is wonderful to see you again,” Phoebe told him as he took a seat on the sage green occasional chair directly across from where they sat on the cream and green-striped settee.

“I had hoped to see you at the Richardsons’ ball. You’d promised to save me a dance.”

Phoebe could not help but smile at the rakish way the man had of conversing. She more than approved when his smile reached his eyes. They positively twinkled—though not at her, but at her chaperone. She wondered if she would end up watching out for Lady Farnsworth’s reputation instead of the other way around. It might be something to discuss with Edward before he made the return trip to Wyndmere Hall to collect his wife.

While the couple conversed, she let her thoughts drift toward her family home in the Lake District. Had the first of the nannies to be interviewed arrived and been approved of by both Jared and Persephone? How were her darling niece and nephew? How was Aurelia? Had anyone guessed that she was carrying Edward’s babe? She smiled knowing their housekeeper and cook would certainly guess her condition if Aurelia suffered from queasiness in the mornings like Persephone had.

“Whatever you’re thinking has you smiling. Care to share your thoughts, Lady Phoebe?”

She jolted back to the present. “I do beg your pardon, Lord Yarmouth. I was thinking of Jared and Persephone’s darling twins. I spent so much time with them in the nursery that it has been a bit difficult being so far away from them.”
