Chapter 21

I gave it five minutes after Zana left the car, and then found my body walking between the building and the tall hedge.

I’d wanted to give it longer, but the overpowering need to be there for her didn’t allow it. At least I’d told Zana I wouldn’t be able to stay in the car, so I hadn’t actually deceived her. And it was only a fraught stroll in the garden after all.

But then burning need turned it into something else. I found myself on the river walk, staring at the bridge like it was the gateway to hell. A little figure in a red cape was walking across, a quarter of the way. Halfway to the centre.

Quickly I averted my eyes. It wouldn’t do for Zana to spot me. It would do even less for Arek to see someone gazing at the bridge like her life depended on it.

I forced myself to slip under the span of the bridge, so I couldn’t be seen. But after a few minutes in its shadow, being so close yet so far away was breaking me in two.

It would be better to make sure I couldn’t see the damn bridge at all, when there was nothing I could do anyway. Then I wouldn’t be tempted to try something idiotic. I had one of the other pendants anyway, so if it came to it Zana could call me for help.

Somehow that wasn’t much consolation when getting to her was going to take more than a minute of time she might not have.
