Paper mills use very small pieces of wood or recycled paper to make new paper. These pieces are called fibers.

At the mill, the paper first goes through a process called pulping. What’s pulping? It’s a way of breaking the paper down into a mix of water and fibers, called pulp. Then, the pulp is passed through screens. This removes things from the pulp that aren’t needed to make new paper.

It takes thick paper a longer time to break down into pulp.

How does wood pulp turn into the white paper we use every day? After the pulp passes through the screens, it’s cleaned. All the inks and dyes used on the recycled paper are taken out of the pulp with special soaps. Then, the pulp is turned white. This step is called bleaching.
