Chapter Four

Oliver wriggled within his shirt and knelt on the floor of the visiting room of the shelter. He stretched his hand out to the shaking pit bull mix. If she sniffed him and didn’t shy away, then he’d be fine to do the shoot. Personally, he rather liked her. She had spots and flecks of black and brown on her white fur.

Thank God he and Bert had made it to the shoot on time. He hadn’t thought they would. Bert had done like he’d threatened and joined Oliver in the shower. Naturally, he and Bert couldn’t keep their hands off each other. Oh well.

When he and Bert arrived at the shelter, Peter hadn’t looked thrilled, but he’d kept his mouth shut.

“Her name is Belle,” Cait, Belle’s handler, said. She offered the leash over to Oliver, then dragged a chair to where he sat. “She’s had a rough life. Her previous owner bred her then brought her back and that was after she’d been rescued from a life as a bait dog.”

“Are you kidding?” He couldn’t imagine anyone giving an animal back. Sure there were probably reasons, but still. He scratched behind Belle’s ears, then petted her back. “Hi, baby. You’re a good girl, aren’t you?”

Belle settled beside him and licked Oliver’s hand.

“She deals with other animals pretty well. She mothers them and has a boyfriend of sorts.” Cait smiled. “She’s fearful, but you’ve gotten her to come out of her shell. You’re the first, so good job.”

He petted Belle some more then when she flopped onto her back, he scratched her tummy. “Good girl,” he said. “Sweet girl.” From the moment he looked into her brown eyes, he fell in love with the dog. “I’ll take her.”

Cait snorted. “She’s not a designer bag or jacket. You can’t give her back if she doesn’t match your shoes.”

He continued to scratch Belle’s ribcage. “I’m not planning on giving her back. I don’t go halfway on anything.”

“I hope that’s true.” Cait smiled and patted her lap. “I’ll leave you here so you can keep getting acquainted. Peter should be around in a moment to grab you for the photos.”

He waited until Cait left the room, then spoke. “Do you want a home for Christmas? A nice, safe home? Lots of toys and plenty of food? We’ve even got a nice yard to run in.”

She stared at him and panted. The dog put her paw on his arm. Was she telling him to stop petting her or not? She head-butted his knee and pawed at him again.

“You do like me.” He chuckled and continued to rub her belly. Now he knew he’d take her home. He had to get Bert’s approval, but he wasn’t worried about that. Not now.

Behind him, the door clicked. He glanced over his shoulder. Bert.

“Who is this?” Bert knelt beside Oliver and offered his hand to the dog.

“Her name is Belle and she had a hard time in life so far. I’m adopting her.” He kissed the top of Belle’s head.
