By the time Recker got back to the office, he already had a pretty good idea of what he was going to say. Heâd been thinking about it for the last thirty minutes. And he was going to say something. He had to. Even though he wasnât going to be around for a while, if he did come back, he wasnât going to let some new guy screw up all his work and create bad blood and animosity with Vincent. Even more, he wasnât going to go away and worry that Phillips was making life worse for Haley and Jones. Recker was hoping the new guy would help alleviate some of his concerns by going away, taking things off their plate, not putting additional weight on it.
Recker barged into the office, immediately locating Phillips sitting at the desk next to Jones. He stormed over to him and stood right in front of him as Phillips turned to face him. âWhat the hell you think youâre doing?â
âExcuse me?â
âYou think youâre some Rambo that just comes onto the scene, shoots a few people, then rides away?â
Phillips stood up. He wasnât ready to back down to anyone. âListen, dude, I helped save your ass.â
âWell, youâll pardon me if I donât say thank you, then? You almost got yourself and the rest of us killed because you were a little too trigger happy.â
Jones stood up, putting himself between the two of them. âMichael.â
Haley, standing against the wall, also sensed things were starting to get heated, and walked over between the two as well. He nudged Recker a few extra inches away, just to make sure they were out of hitting range of each other.
âItâs partially my fault,â Haley said. âI told him to shoot at whatever had a gun out there. I didnât realize Vincentâs men were coming.â
Recker wasnât taking his apology though. âNo, you know as well as I do that when you have a gun out there, you know damn well what youâre shooting at before you pull the trigger.â
âLetâs everyone just cool their heads a little,â Jones said. âItâs been a rough day, things have happened, getting in each otherâs faces wonât help to diffuse the tension.â
âOK, maybe I should have waited another second or two,â Phillips said. âBut I looked over, saw a bunch of people running at us with guns, considering everything else that was going down, what would you have done? Just sit there with your gun in your pocket and let them start shooting?â
Recker backed up and then started pacing about like he was prone to do. He was huffing and shaking his head. He really didnât know what else Phillips was supposed to do. Maybe nothing. Maybe he would have done the same thing in Phillipsâ place. Recker realized that Phillips was brought into a tough situation. Probably an impossible one. Here he was thrust into a situation where he didnât know who the players were and had no knowledge of the history of anybody there. If the roles were different, maybe Recker would have pulled the trigger too.
