Chapter Twenty-Nine

The Realm of Stars

Rone’s words repeat in the back of my mind. I close my eyes, working through what I need to accomplish. Careful to keep my smile contained, I rise from my bed.

My heart thuds in my chest, overjoyed to finally know that Tenna and Olivia are okay, that they’re safe, that Ricardo is healing.

And now, I have a job to do, a purpose.

Pacing, I flex my hands at my sides and mutter under my breath. No words, only nonsense, gibberish. Recalling my time in captivity on Ulysses Station, I long to flood my room with angry music, to sink into it, to really confuse the Drennar.

But the speakers of my Link will have to suffice.

“Lose Yourself by Our Last Night. 2021.” Plays. It’s a favorite of Olivia’s, a holdover from the angry days of her youth. It fills the room, and my heart speeds along, keeping pace with its beat. I let its tension build within me, let the frenetic energy, the heaviness of it, carry me along.

My mind fills with the day the Drennar brought us here, the blood spilled, the people lost, the homes destroyed. My fingers curl into claws, and I ache for a Drennar to appear before me so that I might bring them low.

My footsteps grow heavier, bordering on stomps, and I turn the music up. The walls of this narrow room seem to close in, a far cry from the open fields I want to roam through, should be roaming through.

Tension pulls my muscles into knots, winds my nerves tight.

And now, it’s time to give them a show.

Rage burns through me, and instead of controlling it, instead of letting it fester until I can face them, I smash the bed before me, dropping fists down upon it. It creaks, one side caving beneath the force of my attack.

Grabbing the edge, I harness every bit of strength I possess, putting my legs into it. I scream with the effort, throat burning and face contorting.

But it moves.

I push up harder, ripping the metal bed from its wall, tipping the mattress and blankets to the floor. Fury burns through my lungs, up my throat. I drive the jagged metal into the wall, throwing my weight into it. A dent appears but quickly smooths over.

Fury scorches my veins.

Slamming the crumpled metal bed to the floor, I wrench the table free of the wall, leaving a jagged tear in its place. It begins to smooth over, but I reach in, grabbing the edges and tearing them back. A strange buzzing moves over my skin, small and unpleasant.

But I let it fuel the fires raging within me.

With one last burst of will and strength, I rend the space open, just far enough to crawl through. My breaths come fast as I rise to my full height on the other side of the wall.

No Drennar wait to greet me.

But I’ll find them.

I quell my music and stare into the grey abyss of a hallway. A dark smile turns the corners of my lips upward, and silent footsteps carry me forward, slinking, listening.
