Chapter Thirty-Five

Thea’s eyes widened and her hand flew to her open mouth as her eyes darted back and forth between Ethan and Freddie. When he’d woken her up early and asked her to come over urgently, she’d not known exactly what to expect, but after years of working in the family business she’d assumed she would be walking into a newly acquired business with dodgy paperwork or perhaps a few bruises to clean up and an alibi to learn. She hadn’t expected in a million years to be faced with a new seven-year-old nephew.

‘What the hell, Freddie?’ she said finally, in a squeaky voice through her fingers.

‘Hey, language?’ he replied with a stern look.

‘Oh, right, yeah. Sorry, mate,’ Thea said to Ethan, shaking her head to try and dispel her shock.

‘That’s OK,’ he replied with a shrug. ‘My mum says a lot worse.’

‘And who exactly is your mum, Ethan?’ Thea asked, with a concerned look at Freddie.

‘That can wait until later.’ Freddie headed off the conversation and guided Ethan back into the lounge where Paw Patrol was currently blaring out of the television. ‘You chill out, mate. I’ve just got to pop out for a bit, but Auntie Thea’s going to stay with you until I’m back. Is that OK?’

‘I am?’ Thea asked.

‘You are,’ Freddie confirmed.

Ethan eyed Thea warily and she quickly picked up on his underlying fear. She took a deep breath and smiled kindly. Holding her hand out, she winked.

‘Well, we’d better get better acquainted then, hadn’t we? I’m your auntie Thea and I’m very pleased to meet you. I’m also super fun and I’m going to let you have all the chocolate you want.’

Immediately Ethan grinned. ‘I don’t usually have chocolate, but I like it lots.’

Freddie frowned. ‘Er, he’s only just had breakfast…’

‘Well, we’ll just have to pop to the shop and buy it all up for later on then, won’t we, Ethan?’ Thea said. Ethan nodded eagerly.

‘OK, well, thanks, Thea,’ Freddie said gratefully. ‘I shouldn’t be too long, an hour or so. Just, whatever you do, don’t tell anyone. Especially Mum.’

‘Ho-hooo-no.’ Thea belly laughed, shaking her head and raising her eyebrows. ‘I wouldn’t dream of jumping on that landmine. That conversation is all yours, brother.’

‘Yeah, thanks,’ Freddie replied sarcastically.

‘Just promise you’ll fill me in when you get back, OK?’ Thea said. ‘This is… well, it’s huge.’

‘Tell me about it,’ Freddie replied, looking back at Ethan. He was once more engrossed in his programme, curled up on the sofa in one of Freddie’s gym T-shirts and hugging the stuffed dog that he wouldn’t put down. ‘See you in a bit.’

‘Well, Ethan,’ Freddie heard Thea say as he walked out the door. ‘I just want you to know that everything you think is cool about your dad, he learned from me…’

Freddie shook his head with a small smile as the door shut behind him and silently thanked the heavens for having family around him that he could trust.
