Haylee

Jax should’ve been here by now.

My guts in a knot, I rose from the squishy chair where I’d sat to wait. In the dark. Alone. And scared.

But not defenseless.

My arsenal lay on the floor by my feet as well in strategic locations around the room.

Two socks with bath bombs. The shower curtain rod. Three chair legs. A throwing disc made out of the base of a lamp I’d unscrewed. A plate left over from the meal last night. Plus a few other assorted items.

If someone came after me tonight, they wouldn’t find me helpless, not like the last time, when I’d been lying in a rehab bed.

Something heavy thumped on the balcony, and I froze in place, my fists white knuckling against my sides.

Jax had strung wire out there. Unless a big bird had landed on the deck, the thump would’ve come from someone tripping over the line and falling.

An early warning didn’t stop my pulse from jumping.

As if they thought I might not have heard them, whoever was out on our balcony lightly tested the door. A flimsy thing, the lock wouldn’t hold long. And if someone had made the effort to climb up or down to our balcony, they wouldn’t give up easily.

After setting things in place, I climbed up onto the chair, the curtain rod snug in my right hand, the bath bomb sock in my left.

My heart thundered behind my ribcage, and sweat trickled down my spine. I’d aptly defended myself against multiple challenges during my military career, even when attacked by men one-and-a-half times my size. But back then, I hadn’t been four weeks out from multiple rib and femur fractures. A newborn kitten could knock me over.

To defend myself, I’d have to use my wits instead of the strength I’d relied on for much of my life.

The door didn’t give, partly due to the lock but mostly because of the chair leg Jax had wedged into place to add resistance.

Would they give up? There were limits to what someone could do to break into a room, especially when they must know I could hear them. They might find the main entrance an easier challenge.

As if on cue, the door knob clicked. Back and forth. No hiding their intent now.

My mouth flashed dry. They were coming at me from both directions.

Where was Jax? The fear bolting inside me suggested they’d already gotten to him. Hurt him. I bit back my cry of outrage and pain.

Lifting my chin, I tightened my grip on my weapons. I wouldn’t go down without taking a few of them with me.

A pop and beside me, the safety glass in the French door shattered, hit by a bullet from a gun with a silencer. Bits of glass rained down on the carpet.

I hefted my weapons.

When a head poked into the open doorframe, I slammed the rod down on top of it. I followed it up with a hefty swing of my bath bomb, smacking the person in the neck. With a groan, they toppled onto their knees and fell onto the broken glass inside the room.
