After getting off the phone with General Davidson— who wanted to know why Megan Gallagher and Hassan Younis had been released from Gitmo —Senator Patterson asked his secretary to summon his chief of staff. In less than two minutes, Big Jim Sanford, a former first-team All-SEC offensive lineman for the University of Georgia, came hurrying into the Senator’s office and took his usual seat in one of the chairs in front of the Senator’s desk.

“What’s up, boss?” Big Jim asked.

“Jim, if I was a private citizen and wanted one of the detainees released from Gitmo, who would I see about getting that done?” the Senator asked.

Big Jim leaned back in his chair and gave the Senator’s question a few moments of quiet thought before saying, “Henrietta Sudd, boss.”

“That would have been my choice, too,” the Senator said.

Senator Patterson called his secretary on the intercom and said, “Julia, see if you can get my old friend, Henrietta Sudd, on the phone for me, please.”

They say that politics makes for strange bedfellows. The relationship between Senator Patterson and Henrietta Sudd was the perfect example of the old adage. Although the two were technically members of the same party, they were diametrically opposed to each other on the major issues facing their party. Whereas Senator Patterson was an old line moderate, Henrietta Sudd belonged to the far-left, molotov-cocktail-throwing progressive branch of the party. However, in a rare case of being in the right position at the right time, Senator Patterson had had the opportunity to perform a valuable service for Henrietta Sudd at a crucial point in her career back in the late 80s. To say that she owed him big time would have been an understatement.

After a short wait, the Senator’s secretary buzzed him to let him know that she had Henrietta Sudd on line one for him.

Senator Patterson picked up the phone and said, “Thanks for taking my call so late on a Friday, Henrietta.”

“How’s my favorite Senator from the great state of Georgia doing?” Henrietta asked.

“Henrietta, you and I both know the reason I’m your favorite Senator from the great state of Georgia is that I’m the only one of the two who’s a Democrat.”

Henrietta laughed and said, “Ain’t that the truth. So, what can I do for you, Senator?”

Senator Patterson decided to do a little fishing and said, “Henrietta, word has it that you were a recent visitor over at the West Wing peddling some of that greenback influence you’re well known for. Henrietta, what can you tell me about the most recent release of terrorists from Gitmo?”

Taken by surprise at the revelation that Senator Patterson had somehow learned of her involvement in the release of Hassan Younis and Megan Gallagher, Henrietta took a moment or two to gather her thoughts before saying, “Senator, if I didn’t owe you a favor or two—”

“But Henrietta, you and I both know that you do owe me and I would very much like to hear your side of the story.
