Chapter Eighteen

The week seemed to drag by, but Adhar told me every day, no one had tested them again. Neither he nor Nakul found any evidence of who the potential problem could be or where they went. That was concerning, and they were on high alert.

I was thinking of ways to let down Raphael. Something Adhar wouldn’t agree with, but if he asked me to go to India to help him, there really wasn’t much he could say about Raphael. It would be hard to have a mate in Arizona while I was on the other side of the planet.

By the time Saturday came, I felt as if I’d been beaten up, and I still had to get into one more fight before the marathon was over.

I tried not to dress too fancy for dinner with Raphael. I went for a nice pair of pants and a simple blouse, throwing a leather jacket over it. My jewelry was how I always kept it. I was presentable enough to fit in at Binkley’s but not enough to look like I was expecting romance.

I finally forced myself to take the bangle off, leaving it on my bathroom counter. I was trying to anticipate how this would play out, and wearing it would only work against me.

I can’t let this continue. I need to put an end to it.

I was a stubborn woman, there was no doubt about it.

As I got ready, my phone started going off, and I groaned to see texts from Sorcha, asking me for pictures of what I would wear and if I was nervous.

Kaliya: It’s not a date.

Sorcha: Bullshit. You’re going to look hot. He’s super into you. You know it’s going to go that way. Don’t play coy.

Kaliya: Yeah, I do know it’s going to go that way because someone else warned me. I also figured out that you’ve been feeding him advice on how to get me back. We’re going to have a long talk about that once this is over. You don’t get to meddle in my life like that, Sorcha.

Sorcha: Busted. Fine, we’ll talk. Look, I’m just trying to make sure you’re happy. You were happy with him, and I know he’s into you. I just want to see that. You deserve him, and he cares a lot about you.

I rolled my eyes and ignored my phone after that and got in my car with it on silent. I couldn’t focus on Sorcha yet. I needed to worry about Raphael.

I was there fifteen minutes early, and he still beat me. He was waiting at the front door of the restaurant, grinning when he saw me walk up. There was no missing the small bouquet of flowers in his hands or his crisp, black suit.

“You look beautiful,” he said softly.

“I underdressed.” I looked him over, my mouth watering. My pulse jumped as he shifted, displaying powerful muscle hidden under the façade of civility. I remembered removing his shirt to reveal those hard muscles in my bedroom.
