Gunner returned home as if in a dream. His date with Cassidy, their beautiful kiss—it was like he was experiencing life in full color for the first time. He sat down on the porch outside, staring into the night. Crickets chirped in the pasture. An owl hooted in the distance. He had experienced the scene a thousand times. He lifted the beer to his lips and took a swig. He'd tasted that brand a thousand times, but now this night, this moment, felt as if it were the first. Because Cassidy was his. She was a part of his life. He knew her. He'd touched her. He'd felt her in his arms. He'd smelled her arousing scent and had felt her body pressed hard against his own.

He took a deep breath and let it out, taking in this new sense of fullness and purpose in a world that had been a dark and empty shadow before today. Gunner knew that for him, nothing would ever be the same, that he would live the rest of his life in service of his mate and the beautiful connection and purpose that he felt with her in his life.

But at the back of his mind, he'd felt as if something was off, and it hadn't been until he'd kissed her and felt her that he had been able to put his finger on the issue. As much as he instinctively adored his mate and felt complete loyalty to her, he knew she wasn't being entirely honest with him. She wasn't sharing something right at the edge of their conversation. He couldn't tell what, and he wanted to believe it was because something scared her. She had told him about her father, that he was a hard man, and perhaps there was more to that relationship than she was letting on.

Gunner took another sip of his brew and rocked back and forth on the porch swing. If Cassidy wasn't a hundred percent honest with him, how could he protect her? How could he help her? These thoughts ran through his mind for quite some time. He knew the only answer and the only course of action was to be ready and prepared to provide her whatever it was that she needed. He knew one thing for sure—he would never let her go, and he would never let her down.
