“You can call me any time you want,” I said, watching Shauna’s face for any sign that she was upset. “I’ll have my phone on me at all times. And the reapers shouldn’t be able to target the school again the same way.” Not if Cressida didn’t return until we’d found a fix for the spell on her.

My sister just rolled her eyes. Typical teenager. But weirdly, it made me feel a little better that she was comfortable enough with me now that she’d make that show of dismissiveness rather than trying to stay on her best behavior. She trusted me not to get mad.

“I’ll be fine,” she said. “I’ve been fine for more than a year already when you were all the way off in Portland.”

I grimaced at her. “The reapers didn’t have a bone to pick with me back then. You still need to be more careful than before.”

“I’m not the one who pissed them off,” she pointed out, folding her arms over her chest and leaning back on the sofa in my temporary campus apartment. Then her tone softened a little. “I know you’re worried they’ll try to attack me to punish you, but like you said, they shouldn’t be able to attack anyone around here with no way to easily get past the wards. I already promised I wouldn’t leave campus. I didn’t much before anyway. It’s not like there’s anything so exciting in town.”

And we didn’t have a home to go back to in Portland anymore, not really. I’d have to get the house cleaned up and sell it for however much I could, and then find a new home somewhere else. Somewhere Shauna could safely visit, at least, even if she wanted to strike out on her own as soon as she was done with school.

How long would it take for either of us to be safe anywhere beyond the school wards?

I didn’t like thinking about that or the danger I’d be in the second I stepped outside them. I’d known the risks I was taking on when I’d helped Cressida and Noah escape the reapers. It’d been more than worth it. Maybe I’d have to look into getting a teaching gig so this apartment could be more permanent.

Or maybe the new barons would eventually crush the last of the so-called loyalists, and there’d be no one left who wanted my head on a stick to begin with.

I’d get by either way. I just wished my sister hadn’t become a target at the same time.

“We’ll get through this, like we kept it together after Dad died,” I said. “It can’t be forever.” I refused to let it be forever.

“Of course it won’t be. And I’ve got six more years of school to get through, so you have plenty of time to figure out how to fix things before it matters all that much to me.” She grinned at me a little cheekily to show she was partly joking.

She was right, though, that this was my problem to fix.
