âYou can call me any time you want,â I said, watching Shaunaâs face for any sign that she was upset. âIâll have my phone on me at all times. And the reapers shouldnât be able to target the school again the same way.â Not if Cressida didnât return until weâd found a fix for the spell on her.
My sister just rolled her eyes. Typical teenager. But weirdly, it made me feel a little better that she was comfortable enough with me now that sheâd make that show of dismissiveness rather than trying to stay on her best behavior. She trusted me not to get mad.
âIâll be fine,â she said. âIâve been fine for more than a year already when you were all the way off in Portland.â
I grimaced at her. âThe reapers didnât have a bone to pick with me back then. You still need to be more careful than before.â
âIâm not the one who pissed them off,â she pointed out, folding her arms over her chest and leaning back on the sofa in my temporary campus apartment. Then her tone softened a little. âI know youâre worried theyâll try to attack me to punish you, but like you said, they shouldnât be able to attack anyone around here with no way to easily get past the wards. I already promised I wouldnât leave campus. I didnât much before anyway. Itâs not like thereâs anything so exciting in town.â
And we didnât have a home to go back to in Portland anymore, not really. Iâd have to get the house cleaned up and sell it for however much I could, and then find a new home somewhere else. Somewhere Shauna could safely visit, at least, even if she wanted to strike out on her own as soon as she was done with school.
How long would it take for either of us to be safe anywhere beyond the school wards?
I didnât like thinking about that or the danger Iâd be in the second I stepped outside them. Iâd known the risks I was taking on when Iâd helped Cressida and Noah escape the reapers. Itâd been more than worth it. Maybe Iâd have to look into getting a teaching gig so this apartment could be more permanent.
Or maybe the new barons would eventually crush the last of the so-called loyalists, and thereâd be no one left who wanted my head on a stick to begin with.
Iâd get by either way. I just wished my sister hadnât become a target at the same time.
âWeâll get through this, like we kept it together after Dad died,â I said. âIt canât be forever.â I refused to let it be forever.
âOf course it wonât be. And Iâve got six more years of school to get through, so you have plenty of time to figure out how to fix things before it matters all that much to me.â She grinned at me a little cheekily to show she was partly joking.
She was right, though, that this was my problem to fix.
