Societal Messages

“Allegiance to the flag” means “My country right or wrong.”

“With liberty and justice for all” does not apply to all of us.

White people are superior to all others.

War is justified, and it is a duty to sign up for it.

Patriotism means obedience to what the government dictates.

Don’t take a stand against the established order or policies.

The planet is here for our use and so are the animals.

Getting ahead, no matter what it takes, is legitimate and praiseworthy.

Money is our central goal, worth, and purpose.

A good and happy life is the result of material possessions.

Hold on to biases regarding those you were taught to disparage or look down on, especially when voting.

Be and show your full self at your own risk.

You can’t question governmental authority: “To obey is life; to disobey is death.” (Yes, President Calvin Coolidge really said that. I saw and heard him on film, and I replayed it to be sure I heard correctly. Also, I noticed he spoke with arrogance and incontrovertibility, as if he were giving us all fair warning! To be fair, though, he was referring to a specific crime, not declaring an overall philosophy—at least not explicitly.)
