When to Call THE DOCTOR

Chicken pox is usually more of an annoyance than a danger; most cases clear up in 10 to 14 days without problems. Only in rare cases do serious complications emerge. Still, call your pediatrician once you suspect your child has chicken pox. The doctor can prescribe medications, if necessary, to lessen the severity of the disease. Seek immediate attention if your child has a high fever accompanied by severe headache, has a fever that lasts more than a few days, feels severe pain in his limbs, repeatedly vomits, develops a cough, or has a large area of warmth or redness surrounding one or more blisters—this is a sign of infection.
