Chapter 5

Elijah, the Great Man

Elijah was a good man.

He obeyed God.

A bird brought him food to eat.

Amen.

He stayed with a widow

Who had one meal to eat and die, but she and her son lived

Because she baked

Elijah a cake first.

Elijah brought the widow’s son back to life for he was dead.

Elijah was a good man.

Amen.

There was a great man, who was a prophet, and his name was Elijah. He was a Tishbite. One day God told him to go a widow’s house and she would take care of him.

After a long journey, Elijah arrived at the woman’s house. She was crying as she had food only enough for one meal, which was able to feed only her and her son, so they would eat and die.

‘Bake me a cake first,’ said the prophet to the widow. ‘And as the Lord lives, your barrel of meal and your cruse of oil shall never be empty until the Lord sends rain on the earth.’

The thoughts of her one morsel of meal for her and her son went through her mind, but she refused to be selfish. She listened to the words of the prophet and baked him a cake first, and the widow did all that the prophet told her to do. Because the widow obeyed Elijah, she always had meal and oil.

Elijah was living with the widow and her son for some time when suddenly the widow’s son fell sick and died.

The woman began to cry.

‘He is sleeping,’ said the prophet to her.

He took her son and went upstairs where he was living. He laid the child down and began praying to God as he lay on top of him three times. ‘Oh, Lord, let the soul of this child return to him and let him live again,’ prayed Elijah.

God heard him, and he gave the child life once more. The widow, the mother of the boy, was very happy that she got her son back.
