A Soviet Tragedy

The Soviets designed the Soyuz spacecraft to carry a landing craft to the moon. Soyuz is Russian for “union.” It was the Soviet equivalent to America’s Apollo. The two powerful nations were even in the race to be the first to put a man on the moon.

On April 23, 1967, Soyuz had its first test. The launch succeeded and the craft went into orbit. However, when the pilot, Vladimir Komarov, attempted to land, the parachute failed and Soyuz 1 smashed into the ground at hundreds of miles per hour. Komarov became the first person to die during a spaceflight.
