Back on the boat, Sisu paced impatiently. As Boun tidied up, she chewed over what Raya had said.

“This is giving me bad feels. Chief Dang Hai does not sound like someone you can smooth talk. Raya didn’t even bring a gift.” Sisu came to a decision. “That’s it. I’m going shopping!”

She hopped down from the side of the boat, then stopped. “Oh, wait…I don’t have any money.”

“You’re an adult,” Boun said. “You could just put it on credit.”

Sisu looked at him with interest. “Oooh. What’s credit?”

“It’s kinda like a promise,” Boun explained. “You take what you want now, and you promise you’ll pay it back later.”

Sisu’s face lit up. “Pay it back later…what an amazing concept! Thanks, Captain Boun!”

She started into the market, enjoying all the sights and smells. There were so many nice things to choose from!

Sisu grabbed some skewers of meat off a grill. At the next stall, she spotted a beautiful silk robe and draped it over her arm. “I’ll be buying this with credit. Ooh, Dang Hai’s gonna love this. Credit, please,” she called to the stunned merchant. “Oh, I like that. Uh, yeah. I’ll be using credit. Yes. I love credit!”

Sisu continued through the marketplace, loading her arms with sweet treats, jade necklaces, and rolls of silk. Then she set off to find Raya so they could deliver the gifts to Dang Hai.

She hadn’t gone far when she heard an angry shout. “Hey! You!”

Sisu stopped. A group of merchants were following her. They formed a circle around her, blocking her path.

“Are you going to pay for any of that?” one demanded, pointing to the pile of goods in Sisu’s arms.

“Oh, right, right. No, this is on credit,” Sisu explained. “Yeah, I’m gonna pay you back later.”

“Pay us back later?” another exclaimed. “We don’t know you!”

“You have no credit here. Pay us now!” a third merchant demanded.

Sisu looked around at their furious faces. “Now? I don’t have anything,” she admitted. “But if I could find my girl Raya, she has a sword. Dried eats. Two Dragon Gem pieces—” Sisu broke off, realizing she’d said too much. “No, we don’t. What? Who said that?” she added quickly.

“You better pay up, binturi!” the first merchant continued, and the others chimed in.

“This isn’t a charity!”

“Who do you think you’re stealing from?”

Sisu backed away, feeling frightened and confused. Things hadn’t been like this back when the lands were united as Kumandra. What was she supposed to do?

As the angry merchants closed in, a tiny old woman in a tall purple hat suddenly appeared at Sisu’s side.

“Nee! Nee! Get away from her!” the old woman cried, slapping at the merchants’ hands. “Can’t you see she’s new in town?”

At once, the merchants stepped back, looking chastened. Sisu turned to the woman with a grateful smile.

“Come, dear. Don’t be afraid. It’s okay,” the old woman said, leading her away from the market.

“Those folks were, like, crazy mad,” Sisu said as they walked through Talon. “I just wanted to bring some gifts to the Talon chief, Dang Hai.
