CHAPTER XII

“I don’t know how you have the energy to do all that you do,” Rylee said as they walked through the forest.

The early morning sun was shining down through the canopy, painting everything in a clear golden light. The forest seemed bursting with life and activity today, and Jak felt much the same way. He’d woken up early, eager and almost desperate to face the day, to get things done and make things happen.

Nessa was about the same. Rylee looked very tired though. Jak felt a little bad about that.

He’d taken her for a long time when she’d come to the furs.

And then again in the middle of the night.

And then once more in the morning.

“Just how I’m made,” he replied.

“Also, you do know that I’m already pregnant, right?” Rylee asked. “I appreciate the attention, but we don’t have to plant seeds that often any longer. Or was there something else you were trying to achieve all through the night?”

He laughed awkwardly. “I just...really wanted to get filthy with you.”

“Oh,” she said, a small smile coming onto her face. “It wasn’t about planting seeds, it was about getting filthy.”

“Yes. It was very much about that,” Jak replied.

“I’m still getting used to it, I suppose.”

He began respond, then realized that Tem, who had agreed to come along and help convince Ripper, had fallen back a little, probably feeling a bit awkward about their conversation. He decided to redirect it.

“Tem,” he said, slowing a little so their strides matched, “how did Ripper seem when you visited him?”

“Different,” Tem replied. “In some ways. Very much the same in others. I’m surprised that he’s leading a group of his people. It was an idea I’d said once, but he seemed very reluctant to take on any kind of real leadership role.”

“You probably helped him do so,” Nessa said.

“You think so?”

“Yes. He’s a decent leader, and those are rare among my people. He’s done well so far, from what I’ve seen, but I’m worried about him.”

“Why?” Jak asked.

“I’m concerned that he’ll run into a real problem, like this sickness, and just not know what to do,” she replied.

“To be fair, we had to track down a nymph to find this cure, and we’re not even sure if it will work.”

“I’m fairly confident it will work,” Rylee said. “I wouldn’t have prepared it otherwise.”

“And now all we have to do is convince Ripper to do it,” Jak said. “I’m hoping that won’t be too difficult.”

Nessa sighed. “I honestly cannot say how difficult it will be. He may be outright against it, or so desperate he will immediately agree.”

“I guess we’ll find out,” Tem said.

They slowed as they approached the karn camp. And then they slowed down more when they heard raised voices, what sounded like Ripper and a few others arguing. They all sounded angry and exhausted.

Jak saw that Ripper stood before a small group of others, who looked like they were making demands of him.

“You said you were going to help them by now!” one growled.
