‘Yes, I believe you did have a terrible air raid last Wednesday. I heard all about it from people who were on leave, it was the worst yet was it not? I am glad to hear you were not worried by it much. Oh, before I forget. Could you let me know as soon as possible the registration number of my war savings certificates as we are buying them here and we have to let them know the number of the card?

‘We are having a swimming match next Monday and I hope to get in the team. I am afraid I couldn’t let you know about the wings exam before because the results were not out until the day before yesterday. I got through all right and I was twenty-fourth out of about fifty, so it was pretty average (better than I expected). So all I have to do is make sure I don’t get suspended from flying. We have started night flying although I have not actually done any yet, I expect I shall tomorrow night or the night after.
