The brand new shoes Luka purchased for me and had delivered sit on the living room table, lined up like naughty little suspects. He didn’t just get me a new pair of sneakers. He also bought a pair of black heels, a pair of black ballet flats, and two pairs of sandals—one with a wedge heel and one without.

“You can keep staring at them, Pchelka, but they are going in the closet with the rest of your belongings.” Luka rounds the couch and sits on the cushion beside me.

“I put on the pair you gave me yesterday. Why did you have to do this too?” I point at the shoe boxes lined up in front of us. And it’s not like he went the reasonably priced route either. The black heels are Jimmy Choo’s. I could pawn them and pay my rent for a few months.

“Because you needed more than one pair, and some nice shoes.” He picks up the box with the sleek wedge sandals in them and tosses the lid back onto the table. “These will be nice with the short summer dress hanging in the closet.”

“You didn’t.” My eyes bulge. “Tell me you didn’t.”

“I won’t lie to you, Pchelka, not even about something silly like a dress.”

I shove off the couch. “You’re insane.”

Running down the hall to the bedroom, I hear his slow booted steps following behind me. The closet door is already open when I get there, so I throw the switch and step inside. The items I brought from home are still neatly folded in my overnight bag on the floor. But half of the closet that was bare yesterday is now full of dresses, slacks, blouses, skirts, jeans, and t-shirts. An entire fucking wardrobe is in here.

“You’re insane!” I yell as I pull a hangar off the rod. I’m not a complete fool. I can admire the beauty of this dark maroon dress with its three-quarter sleeves and full skirt. The wedges would go great with this dress too.

“That one is for tonight.” He leans a shoulder against the door frame and folds his arms over his chest.

“I can’t take these.” I glance down the long row of clothing. “I have clothes, Luka. I know they aren’t as sophisticated as all this, but they’re mine.” I shove the dress back onto the rod.

“There’s nothing wrong with your clothing,” he says, bending down to pick up my overnight bag. “But you didn’t bring enough, and you deserve better. I know you’ve been on your own since your grandmother passed away and money has been an issue. It’s not now.” He opens my bag and grabs the two rolled up t-shirts I have left in the bag. “These are fine for at home, or when you go to class, but tonight I’m taking you out and you need something else.” He drops the shirts back in and drops the bag to the floor of the closet.

“I’m not taking these when you go back to Russia. I’m not taking them.
