In the morning after we dressed in fresh clothes, we met with K’lyah for a quick breakfast while we decided our plan of attack. She would personally take the knife to an undisclosed location and send a messenger to Asta’s enemies that the knife was up for the taking. The messenger she’d hired to go to Asta herself was waiting nervously at the entrance, a Nyxblud not much older than the girl who had to be Judah’s little sister. I wondered if his parents knew he would be putting his life at risk today.

I wondered if they cared.

He took the letter I’d written and signed—and sealed with a bit of blood magic—and disappeared down the tunnel without a word to any of us.

I hoped Asta didn’t hurt him.

I hoped Judah and Nyall were okay.

For the fiftieth time, I asked, “Anything from Nyall?” and for the fiftieth time my guys said, “No.”

They would be okay. They had to be.

“Where are we going?”

Judah’s mother looked tired and I wondered if she’d gotten any sleep last night. I hadn’t gotten much, but that had been by choice and it had served to draw the ties between me and my guys tighter, which would only help us in a fight. “To a spire closed for construction. The gondola wires have been removed, but smaller wires still remain strung between the spire and the level above T’waddi. It will take some work and courage, but it will hopefully be unexpected. We will provide you with clothing to match the sky above and the ground below so you will be harder to spot with the naked eye. “

Sliding down the wire yesterday had been terrifying. I was trying really hard not to think about the climb up. Or the distance between the wire and the ground. “I have rumors ready to circulate about sightings of otherlanders. It will keep her guard busy chasing down witnesses and hopefully give you an opportunity to get to the spire without detection.” She was staring at her hands, eyes downcast, and I slid onto the seat next to her.

“Are you all right?”

She shook her head once, then tightened her features. “We will have to leave the city once this is done. If the queen survives, and I have little doubt she will, our family will have a bounty on our heads. I’d hoped …” She stopped herself. “It matters not. There are other places than these and power to be had for the ambitious.”

I nibbled my lip and glanced at Cade. He seemed to understand what I was thinking and shrugged. Worth a try, that shrug said. “You should come with us, K’lyah, you and your family. Through the crack. She’d never touch you there.” I didn’t know how Judah would feel about that, but I knew he wouldn’t want his family harmed or killed because of our actions today.

She shook her head, then sighed as she thought about it. “It is an intriguing proposal.”

I nodded. It wasn’t a yes
