My intestines twisted. I’d come here to do a good job and prove to Harry I deserved a promotion. I hadn’t counted on a heart-to-heart with the man who’d let my fiancé pawn everything we owned. Logan was the reason I’d taken up reading, because Kyle had pawned our TV a week before he did a runner.

But this small gesture counted more than the TV.

‘Thank you.’

His broad shoulders shrugged, making his flannel shirt strain against his biceps. ‘Least I could do. Shows you I’m not a total bastard.’

Yes, it does. But his blue eyes were sincere, searching mine for a reprieve. ‘Maybe not a total bastard. Just a bit of a bastard.’

His Roman nose crinkled. ‘I’ll take it.’

I needed privacy to release my unshed tears. Having a stakeout at a pawnshop, I’d expected some action, not a tearful breakdown. I pocketed the ring in my jacket before pulling it on. ‘I’m going to have a walk around outside.’

He moved to follow me. ‘I’ll come with you.’

‘I’m fine.’ I pointed to the baton on my hip. ‘I’ll shout if I need you.’

His eyebrows formed a V as he growled, ‘You better. I’ll be watching on the cameras.’

The thought of him watching me on camera made me tingle in the one place I’d been trying not to tingle.
