I’d always considered myself “a poet,” a literary writer whose audience was meant to be in the low three figures. My goal prior to being Fiona’s mother was to publish in obscure journals with print runs of a few hundred and acceptance rates in the fractions of 1 percent. This way, by creeping belly-down through the eye of the prestigious literary needle, I’d know my work was good. And maybe some search committee at some university would think I was good too.

But raising a child who ate yardsticks for breakfast was having the effect of eating my own yardsticks too.

Grace laughs in the face of conventional wisdom, I heard progressive Christian writer Rob Bell say years later. It doesn’t keep score. . . . Because being good enough was never the point. . . . God was never keeping score.

Fiona was teaching me grace. I was waking up to some new way of seeing the world, and I wanted to share this with tired parents across the globe in the sloppiest and most efficient way possible. So I wrote blog posts, unprestigious, unawarded, and unacclaimed blog posts, and I received emails of thanks from parents, and it became the most satisfying writing I’d done to date.

One day, an email I never expected arrived not from a parent but from a daughter:
