Okay.

Okay.

Don’t panic. You tried your best.

Why was it that when Rosa did my makeup, I looked fresh and vibrant and young and cool…

But when I tried to do the exact same thing, following her very detailed instructions, I looked like a clown?

Or a troll.

Or some crazy swamp monster.

Tossing the biggest brush of the bunch onto the bathroom counter, I leaned closer to the mirror and crinkled my nose at the painted thing staring back. My eyeshadow had no subtlety, just smears of dark brown dirt over my lids. Clearly I still couldn’t color inside the lines, my gloss past my lip line, and I guess Mulberry Kiss wasn’t my shade of blush, because it made me look really sunburnt.

Not cool.

Not pretty.

Just a mess.

“Kira?” I tipped my head side to side, angling it this way and that, hoping that maybe from another point of view, the last two hours of work and rework had been for something. “Opinion?”

Nothing. She passed out the second I’d dumped my new makeup bag on the counter and kicked the door shut. Yeah, an empty, echoey house meant there was no one around to witness my shame, but it felt safer attempting this behind closed doors.

Attempt failed.

I looked ridiculous.

Scowling, I smacked the faucet and cupped my hands beneath the lukewarm stream, then hunkered down to splash away the evidence.

Two days after three alpha males turned my world on its head, I’d just wanted to look nice for Ewan. I mean, he had paid the outrageous bill at Rosa’s salon for all the services spent turning me into someone presentable, and he hadn’t even gotten a chance to reap the rewards.

Whatever those were.

Anyway—something held him up at the office that night, and after twiddling my thumbs for another hour with Rosa like the last lonely kid waiting to be picked up from daycare, I went home without him.

But not alone. Ethan and Rosa had driven me back to the house, the short time spent with both of them confirming their Perfect Couple status in my brain. She was short and curvy, he was tall and lean. He looked at her like she was the sun, him her gorgeous full moon. The warlock called her Rosebud, and she blushed up a storm, pushing at him playfully, all giggly, seeming ten years younger as soon as he showed up.

Good guy.

Told me I looked pretty—like a real alpha’s mate.

As soon as they left, I had washed it all off. With nobody at the house and bed calling my name, I scrubbed my face raw. Went to sleep alone, surrounded by pillows again. Woke up to another breakfast feast from Soren, but he hadn’t stayed.

Some plumbing emergency in a few of his cabins had called him away.

And Ewan didn’t show.

And neither did Lucian.

But as soon as I crushed the last crispy slice of bacon in my mouth yesterday, the doorbell rang, and on the other side: Rosa. Wonderful Rosa with a makeup kit just for me and a million romance movies for us to devour in the basement cinema room.
