Chapter Six
James
âWOW, THIS is amazing,â Kyle said as they walked into the workshop. Mr. Richardson beamed as they headed back to the large workbench that took up the entire back wall.
âIâm impressed itâs so warm in here,â James said as he stripped off his coat.
âI got the place insulated a few years ago. My old bones donât like the cold much, and I wasnât getting much work done out here over the winter. So Molly insisted I get this place set up for year-round work before she divorced me. Apparently, I was distracting her with all my moping, and she has her own projects,â Mr. Richardson said with a wink.
âJames,â Kyle said, his voice catching. âI know what I want to make.â
Kyle was staring at the sea glass laid out on Mr. Richardsonâs workbench. His eyes were wide with excitement, and his skin was flushed. James wanted to grab Kyle up in his arms and kiss him, but restrained himself. It wasnât time yet.
âWhat is it you want, Kyle?â asked James carefully, not wanting his voice to betray his desire.
âA rainbow wave. I mean, I guess thatâs so obvious. But I want to make her a rainbow to make that room shine. With Cape May diamonds as the sunâs reflection on the wave.â
âWell, then, a wave made out of a rainbow it is! But first, Iâm gonna send you on an expedition,â Mr. Richardson said with a pleased expression.
âA what?â Kyle asked.
âWell, as you can see, I have a lot of glass pieces right here. But it will mean a lot more if you collect some of the pieces that go in your project yourself. You wonât find a whole rainbow on Sunset Beach, but you can find sea glass in a few different colors.â
âOh yes, thatâs exactly what I want to do. I already found some light green ones and a few Cape May diamonds,â Kyle replied.
âExcellent! And you are in luck because thereâs a storm coming in tonight, which means that the next few days will be a wonderful time for beachcombing. Now, your young man here said that you boys were in town for a week or so?â Mr. Richardson asked. James flushed with pleasure at the description.
Eyes wide, Kyle looked at James. âUm, yeah, Iâm here for a week.â
âThatâs perfect. Iâll show you a few things around here to give you some ideas. Then you two can go off and have a nice day together and keep each other warm during the storm. Take a few days to collect your treasures from the beach. You two come back here on Tuesday. Once youâve settled on your design, weâll set it to polish in the tumbler, and you come back on Thursday and weâll put it all together. Sound good?â Mr. Richardson asked, a broad smile on his face.
âUm, yeah that sounds great. Thank you so much for helping me, Mr. Richardson,â Kyle said.
âOh, itâll be fun. I love doing this, and itâs nice to find myself an apprentice.
