The Boy Who Refused to Talk to Us
The task of the homeopath is to understand the patient in as much depth as possible. During our interview of the parents and child, we try to ask the children meaningful questions in a way that is fun and lighthearted enough that they won’t feel threatened. Imagine our surprise on sitting down with David and his mom when we discovered that he had made a pact with himself prior to our meeting to maintain complete silence throughout the interview. The quality that we remember best about David is his silent determination. He kept his vow of silence, for one whole hour. We were impressed!
David, an eleven-year-old from Eugene, Oregon, was a creative young man, but transitions were tough. He threw tantrums when he got home from school and after returning from visiting his dad (his parents were divorced). Switching from one activity to another was a challenge. His mom described it as a problem with boundaries and limits. “My son was born talking,” his mom continued. “He just doesn’t understand when to be quiet or how far to push. The least little no sets him off. He yells, stomps his feet, slams doors.”
David’s main problem at school was concentration, which explained his diagnosis of ADHD. His teachers complained about his talking out of turn, rushing through his work resulting in mistakes, and showing below-average social skills. Other kids seemed to be put off by David’s behavior. The problem could be partially chalked up to a gossipy group of peers, but the problem went further. When he finally was lucky enough to get invited to another kid’s house, he was generally not asked back. There were six no-shows at his birthday party. Yet David had superb phone skills and could be articulate beyond his age. Girls either fell in love with David or were mean to him. He was usually oblivious as far as girls were concerned, except for his older sister, with whom he was forever in battle.
The daily tantrums were usually directed toward his mom, with whom he lived. When she tried to set limits, David threatened, “I hate you! I want to go live with Dad!” But deep down the anger erupted out of a sadness that his parents had separated. He disliked going back and forth between their houses, and although in his angry moments he demanded that he wanted to live with his father, once there he would call his mom and tell her he missed her. One minute he would be all hugs and kisses; the next he hated everything his mother did. Since he was only one and a half when his parents divorced, he was never able to remember a time when he had a mom and a dad together under one roof. He wrote poems about the sadness in his heart.
There was no doubt that David was talented. He dreamed of being an architect and could construct an elaborate structure out of paper or a refrigerator crate.
