Instead, we try to fill the hole with food, sex, relationships, power, money or the ultimate high. But if we’re lucky, we wake up one day and realize that none of these work. When we hear the deeper call from within, the authentic search for what is true can begin. And in being willing to meet what has been denied in ourselves for so long, we invite the fullness of love to enter our lives and to make us whole once again.

As you learn to make friends with yourself, you relax beneath the hard exterior that defines you and sink into the soft center of honest vulnerability. And right here - in your heart - is an innocent child who feels everything in its delicious intensity. It is your heart that was wounded each time love was withdrawn from you but it is your ego that has numbed the pain by creating a fortress of lies.

When these old strategies have outlived their usefulness we often find that the outer structure of our lives starts to crumble. Marriage, career, finances and home frequently get fraught with difficulty, conflict and confusion when there’s something urging you to grow beyond your limitations. When things start falling apart, you can be sure that the child that lives in your heart is calling you to awaken to your full potential. And until you truthfully embrace this neglected part of yourself, you remain a child in an adult’s body.
