MGN 379 discusses many of the limitations and should be read in prep for any deck officer exam. It covers the limitations of several types of electronic Nav aids including ECDIS.

The following limitations are the most significant with automatic radar plotting and are indeed the most asked about in a deck officer oral exam:

The 3 minute wait

The IMO performance standards require auto plotting to reach it’s required standard after 3 minutes of steady state tracking. After 1 minute the radar must be able to give us a rough CPA to within 1 nautical mile – obviously this grade of accuracy is to all intent and purpose unusable. Therefore, we have to wait the full 3 minutes so steady plotting to get our full report to the required accuracy. This is a limitation within current performance standards and although a radar maybe able to obtain the required accuracy quicker we should still wait the full time before making any collision avoidance decision based on the data.
