Chapter 4

Filthy bats, though Jock when he caught up a few minutes later and got a whiff of what had taken his bride. Well, not bats, exactly. The pack's ranch bordered a spread owned by actual bats, the Fledermous commune or flock or whatever a family group of bats was called. Bat shapeshifters were pretty much the cause of all those stories about blood suckers turning into bats. What he smelled here were actual vampires, not misunderstood, fruit-loving flying rodents.

Some vampires could transmorph into bats but most could not. That didn't stop folks from calling all vampires "bats." Jock knew quite a bit about their kind as well, though most of his information was anecdotal. That was why he hadn't realized those hombres at the reception were vampire familiars. He'd never met one before.

They didn't exactly smell human but they didn't really smell like blood suckers, either. Now that he knew what they were, the olde timey costumes three of them had been wearing made sense.

In exchange for blood donations and taking care of daylight business for their masters, vampires gave their familiars a little of their own blood. Not enough to turn them; that required being drained dry and several days of being buried in unconsecrated ground. Just enough to share some of the vampire's abilities, like no aging and some heightened senses, without incurring the vampire's curse of being unable to tolerate sunlight and holy relics.

That long, unaging life meant that a really old vampire sometimes had some really old familiars. Humans had a habit of clinging tightly to things familiar to them as the world advanced past them, things like colloquial phrases and fashion. Just look at all the eighty-something people in nursing homes still wearing leisure suits and bouffant hair. The end result with vampire familiars might be a '30s gangster in a 21st century setting refusing to use a cell phone. That worked to his advantage every bit as much as them not knowing how to use their heightened senses to spot the lone werewolf in a room.

After Pablo and his two buddies left with Amanda, he'd gotten the jump on the guy who'd held a knife to his back to keep Jock from stopping the kidnapping. The man had stayed behind to keep an eye on the reception and tried to report once it became clear that Jock was more than some random human chosen to fill in for the traitorous groom.

Renfeild, as Jock had decided to call him, had gotten up high where Jock had to work to get at him and whipped out a cell phone. Then ol' Renfeild had started swearing about wise guys who never turned their phones on. By the time Renfeild remembered that Pablo, being a relatively young guy, would have his phone turned on, Jock had gotten to his hidey hole in an old water tower and then it was too late to call in a report because he was dead.

That had taken all of five minutes, which wasn't enough of a lead to keep Jock from finding their scent trail and following it.
