When Muslim friends object that Christians are not really being monotheists, we could answer by saying that divine maths is not about addition but multiplication: 1 × 1 × 1 = 1. We could answer the objection about logic by saying that God is beyond our understanding and is a mystery. Both our religions are founded on convictions about revelation, not logic per se. When they object that the word ‘Trinity’ isn’t found in the Bible, we could respond by saying that the word Tawhid (God’s oneness) isn’t found in the Qur’an, yet both concepts are taught by these books. We could also say that the Qur’an doesn’t properly confront the true biblical Trinity because what it condemns is actually the worship of God, Mary and Jesus (Surah 5:73, 75, 116). However, while all these answers are true, we can say much more that is wonderful about our one God who is three persons.
