He knew what everyone had told him about not trusting humans but hadn’t seen anything that showed she was anything but a nice normal little girl. She was not so different from his daughters at home. So, he decided to bring over the bag.

She reached into the middle pouch and into a secret pocket. She pulled out the vial of tears. They seemed to glisten blue and purple in the orange light of the jail. She held it up to him, making sure he could see them, but not reach them through the jail bars.

Malcolm started to explain, “These,” he said with great respect, “are phoenix tears. They can heal a mortal wound or cure any ailment. They are the most precious medicine in all the Earth.”

The guard’s eyes widened. Though he had never ventured up to the surface, he had still heard of the magic of the phoenix and the healing properties of their tears. That vial, small as it was, was the most valuable thing he had ever seen.
